Blue House Ainslie

Role

Design, build, plant selection and set out

Date

1998-2020

This is the garden that started my passion for horticulture. We bought the house in 1998 with just a Crepe Myrtle tree on the block. A hedge was the first investment in the garden to give us privacy on the corner block. With funds exhausted after a big extension, we tackled the landscaping ourselves, including chipping and laying all those red bricks.

The garden is divided into rooms and every room in the house has a connection to the garden.

Formal hedges and small lawn areas provides year round green on green. Weeping Cherry and Magnolia trees fills the garden with fragrance. A large Manchurian pear tree shades the main outdoor and indoor entertaining areas. The front yard is filled with the original Crepe Myrtle, Japanese maples, standard cherry trees, Magnolias and Dogwoods. Plants were selected so they flower one after another giving features in the garden all year. Large nature strip dry bed gardens planted with long flowering perennials attract bees and other insects as well as locals walking by.

The garden gave me a place to be creative, connect with nature, entertain family and friends and find peace and quiet. I hope I can help you build your own garden and achieve the same pleasure it gave me.
